#Love (2026) Review: Balaji Mohan’s Netflix Rom-Com Pits Chemistry Against Compatibility
Balaji Mohan returns to the director’s chair with #Love, a Netflix Original Tamil series that arrives on October 2, 2026, with a disarmingly simple question at its core: can love be engineered, or does it only ever happen by accident?
It is a premise tailor-made for the streaming era, and the series wears its high-concept ambitions lightly. Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi headline a modern romance that trades grand gestures for the messier, funnier reality of dating in urban India.
What Is #Love About?
The series centres on Tara and Matthew, two single, rival dating-app founders who have built entire businesses helping strangers find their happily-ever-afters while their own romantic lives remain stubbornly unsolved.
Tara runs FOUND, an app built on the philosophy of personality compatibility — the belief that lasting love is the product of matched traits, shared values and rational assessment.
Matthew operates Find My Bae, which champions raw chemistry — the intangible spark that no data set can quantify or predict.
Both are professionally successful yet personally unfulfilled, a contradiction that fuels the show’s central tension. The inciting incident arrives when Tara challenges Matthew to a bet he cannot refuse, forcing both to put their opposing philosophies to the ultimate test.
As they take a chance on the challenge, they find themselves drawn to the one variable their algorithms could never predict: each other.
#Love Cast and Crew: The Talent Behind the Series
Notably, Aishwarya Lekshmi has publicly stated she quit Instagram and will not return, making her one of the few South Indian leads of her generation to operate entirely outside the platform economy of stardom.

The Balaji Mohan Scale Shift: From Maari to #Love
The most revealing lens on #Love is the trajectory of its director. Balaji Mohan broke out with the micro-budget indie Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi and later helmed Maari, a mass-market Dhanush vehicle built for single-screen spectacle.
With #Love, he pivots to a Netflix Original Series — a format that swaps the 2,000-screen theatrical blitz for a global streaming footprint across five Indian languages.

The economics are fundamentally different. Where Maari was measured by opening-weekend footfalls, #Love will be measured by completion rates, binge metrics and Top 10 chart entries.
For Arjun Das, too, this is a deliberate lane change. Known for intense, brooding antagonists in Kaithi and Master, he now plays a self-aware romantic lead — a shift that signals how OTT has rewritten the career map for Tamil character actors.
What Does #Love Explore Beyond the Romance?
Beneath the compatibility-versus-chemistry hook, #Love weaves in secondary arcs around friendship, family, ambition and the pressures of entrepreneurship in India’s competitive tech landscape.
The characters are written as ambitious, emotionally layered and flawed. Tara is a builder who struggles and falls yet keeps constructing.
Matthew is a hopeless romantic hiding behind a chill exterior, convinced that “compatibility” is just a fancy word people use when they’re scared to take a real chance.
The narrative world-building situates these conflicts inside the contemporary dating industry, where the promise of finding love has become a profitable enterprise — and the founders themselves remain its most poignant case studies.
Netflix’s South Indian Play: Where #Love Fits
Netflix has significantly expanded its South Indian content investment in 2026, licensing over 50% of the top 10 highest-grossing Tamil and Telugu films annually since 2023.

#Love sits within that growing Originals slate for the region, positioned alongside titles like Legacy and The Game.
The strategy is already paying dividends: Netflix’s South Indian films appeared in global Top 10 lists across 59 countries in 2025, up sharply from 26 in 2024.
That international appetite for Tamil content is precisely the runway #Love is built for — a Tamil-language romantic comedy designed to travel.
